Rebeca Beeman
Senior Staff Representative
Born in Mexico and raised primarily in the Chicago area, Rebeca (Beca) first learned about AMIGOS during a high school Spanish class. That same summer she volunteered with AMIGOS in southern Ecuador planting organic gardens and doing reforestation projects with local youth. Thirteen years and many AMIGOS roles later, Beca is honored to be part of the International Board as the Senior Staff Representative and looks forward to contributing in new ways to the organization that has meant so much to her over the years.
Beca's AMIGOS history includes the following:
- 1995: Volunteer, Ecuador
- 1996 - 1997: Service Learning Coordinator, Chicago North Chapter
- 1998: Volunteer, Mexico
- 2000: Project Supervisor, Honduras
- 2001 - 2003: Chapter Services Administrator, International Office in Houston
- 2004: Project Director, Nicaragua
- 2006 - 2007: Board Member, Portland Oregon Chapter
- 2007 - 2008: AMIGOS Fellow, Mexico
Most recently, Beca was the AMIGOS Fellow and Project Director in Oaxaca, Mexico. During her Fellowship in Oaxaca she worked closely with three partnership agencies and managed two distinct projects for college-aged Volunteers (Digital Culture and Community Nutrition). Her time in Mexico was rich and rewarding on many levels. In particular, Beca enjoyed the challenge of recruiting and training local youth as AMIGOS Latin American Youth Counterparts and developing the Digital Culture project further.
Prior to her AMIGOS Fellowship in Mexico, Beca lived in Portland, Oregon and worked at Lewis & Clark College as the Assistant Director of the Overseas Programs department. Some of Beca's interests include film, photography, non-fiction writing, triathlons, travel and adventuring in the outdoors. Beca can currently be found studying documentary photography in Portland, Maine at The Salt Institute for Documentary Studies.
