Project Area:

This project is located in the mountainous region of northern Nicaragua, surrounded by six other departments and sits right on the boarder of Honduras.  It is the coffee capital of Nicaragua.  In fact, it is home to the Selva Negra, a coffee plantation that won the world’s most sustainable farm last year.  Matagalpa is also famous for its breathtaking views of the Nicaraguan country side.  AMIGOS’ headquarter city will be in the city of Matagalpa, nestled in the mountains of Nicaragua.  All of the communities will be located 2-3 hours up the different hills that surround this striking city.

Project History:

This will be AMIGOS second year partnering with CARE International (CARE) in the department of Matagalpa. AMIGOS previously worked in the department of Matagalpa in 1977. We also have a long standing relationship working with CARE International in Nicaragua.  Most recently we partnered with CARE on a latrine construction project in the department of Leon in 2003. CARE and AMIGOS will continue working in collaboration in 2010.

AMIGOS Voices

“My AMIGOS experience shaped and influenced my entire life. I can’t imagine what I would be like today without the exposure to the rest of the world that AMIGOS gave me. I’m sure that my choice of a health care profession was influenced by my AMIGOS experience.”
