Chairperson
Doug Alexander is the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of AMIGOS. Doug served as a Volunteer in Nicaragua in 1970, the summer following his junior year in high school. The next year he moved up to Project Staff, and from 1971-75 he worked for AMIGOS every summer in a progression of positions, from Project Supervisor to Regional Director for South America. While on Project Staff, Doug worked for AMIGOS in seven countries—Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay.
Following his last summer in Latin America, Doug worked for 9 months on the Professional Staff of the AMIGOS International Office in Houston, in the Chapter Services department.
In 1985, Doug again became active with AMIGOS, co-founding the Austin Chapter with two other alumni of the 1970 Nicaragua project. He served as the first President of the Austin Chapter from 1985-89; he returned to the chapter presidency again fifteen years later, serving from 2004-06. Doug also served on the AMIGOS Board of Directors from 1986-1992. In 2005, he was invited to return to the Board as Vice-Chairperson, a position he still holds.
Doug grew up in California, graduating from Pomona College in 1975. He has been a lawyer since 1980, the year he graduated, cum laude, from the University of Houston Law Center.
Doug is a founding partner of Alexander Dubose Jones & Townsend LLP, a firm that specializes in civil appeals. He is recognized as one of the premier advocates specializing in practice before the Texas Supreme Court. Doug has authored and co-authored a number of papers regarded as preeminent guides to practice before that Court, including The Ultimate Petition for Review, Drafting a Brief on the Merits in the Supreme Court of Texas, Crafting an Effective Amicus Brief to the Supreme Court of Texas, and Supreme Court of Texas Internal Operating Procedures. He has been named as a Texas Super Lawyer in Appellate Law by Law and Politics and Texas Monthly magazines, and was named by the same magazines to a list of the Top 50 Lawyers in Central and West Texas.
Doug’s legal experience includes serving as a Law Clerk for the Hon. John R. Brown, former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit; teaching as an Adjunct Professor of Appellate Advocacy at the University of Texas School of Law; and serving on the Civil Appellate Law Examination Commission of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He is currently Chair-Elect of the 1,700-member Appellate Section of the
State Bar of Texas. Doug is board certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and is a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.
Doug currently lives in Austin with his wife, Stacy, 12-year-old stepson, Ryan, and 17-yearold Indonesian exchange student, Danang. He has two grown children, Dan and Laura. He cycles to work every day and is active in other sports, including tennis, skiing, roller-blading and (believe it or not) skateboarding and surfing. As a result of his AMIGOS experiences, Doug has an abiding love of languages and foreign travel.
