Every year, Amigos de las Américas (AMIGOS) sponsors a Photo and
Essay Contest. The winning photo and essay will appear in the 2008
Annual Report, and all entries may be used in future AMIGOS
publications. Most of the photos you see on our website and in our
publications were taken by Volunteers and Project Staff like you!
“What are you looking for?”
We are looking for images and/or words that capture your AMIGOS
experience. Photos and essays will be judged for overall style and
impression, quality, creativity and depiction of Volunteers
collaborating with community members. We want to see you in action! Only 2008 Volunteers and Project Staff are eligible.
“What if I win?”
- The winners of both the photo and the essay contest will win a $100 cash prize!
- The winning entries will also be published in the 2008 Annual Report.
“Anything else I should know?”
- Entries are due by Thursday, September 18, 2008.
- Digital submissions are preferred. Please submit them to abecker@amigoslink.org
with photos in the highest possible resolution. Please include your
name and photo title as well as the country in which the photo was
taken.

“The entire summer in Uruguay with Amigos de las Américas played out
like a grand mate ritual: sharing, serving, and trying a myriad of new
flavors. Work in La Colorada, a tiny town perched on the scenic coast
of Uruguay, depended on collaboration with the youth of the community.
Before we arrived, the youth laid out several projects they wanted to
complete… My partner and I cannot say that we completed these
projects—that honor belongs to the community—but we did catalyze the
completion. For example, when we painted over the graffiti scribbles on
the bus stops, so many teenagers showed up to help that we did not have
enough paintbrushes for everyone. After painting a vibrant base coat,
we accented the bus stop with our handprints, an explicit symbol of the
collaborative effort.…”
-An excerpt from “Lessons from Mate” by Anna Morenz from Tucson, AZ, who volunteered in Uruguay in 2007.
