Alumni Trip

From Dec 28 - Jan 3, 2011 a group of 11 AMIGOS alumni, friends and family embarked on an International Service Alumni Tour in Yucatan, Mexico. We arrived in Merida, visited Izamal, Yaxcaba, Yaxunah, and Valladolid.

In Yaxunah, we spent 3 nights in the rural community getting to know local families. We worked with the local youth group to paint 9 houses green ("Yax" means green, "nah" means house) in an effort to support the community's effort to qualify as a Puebla Magica or Magic Village, which grants them support from the government to preserve their traditions.

Our goal was 9 but in total, we painted 12 houses, visited 5 archeological sites, 3 cenotes, 1 of the New 7 Wonders of the World (Chichen Itza). Additionally, cultural anthropoogist and AMIGOS alumna Dr. Grace Bascope gave us insight on Chichen Itza, Kinich Kakmo,  Ek Balam, Ake, and the partially excavated Archeological Zone in Yaxunah.

We ate delicious home-cooked meals including Relleno Negro with handmade tortillas. We toured a private collection of folk art in Valladolid.  Some of the group stayed an extra day and ventured to Progreso where we did some impromptu beach clean-up.
