Insights from a Host Mom

By:Dottie Heckman, Host Mom for a Youth Ambassador

When Jack suggested we host a young person from South America, I was not totally for the idea.  Having another teenager in the house…when we already had 2?…but, the experience has been wonderful.  Fernando brought a freshness and an energy to our home that was delightful.  Through him we also got to know Joel and Sabba.

Fernando was so excited about being in the United States and was willing to try new foods (even vegetables), thoroughly enjoyed new experiences (like seeing the ocean, going sledding and even vacuuming) and practicing his English (which is very good). My children, Abby and Daniel connected with him through music, movies and you-tube.  Abby was able to practice her Spanish and Daniel was home for many more dinners than usual and joined us for all of the Amigos activities forgoing activities with his friends.

My family would love to do this again and will be very sad to see Fernando leave on Wednesday.  We will miss his smile and P hope he will come back for a visit…or, maybe we can visit him!
