AMIGOS Testimonials

"AMIGOS is a youth leadership organization that allows us, as parents, to give a gift to our children by allowing them to participate in the program so that they may give their own gift to others. The benefit of helping others is priceless."

"It's pretty difficult being a parent in this world. As a parent I wanted my child to grow up to make a contribution to the world or some small part of it. I wanted him to be self-confident and yet humble. I wanted him to see beyond Portland, Oregon and understand that he is a citizen of the world. AMIGOS supported my job as a parent to help my son gain these valuable qualities as he developed."

"My AMIGOS experience shaped and influenced my entire life. I can't imagine what I would be like today without the exposure to the rest of the world that AMIGOS gave me. I'm sure that my choice of a health care profession was influenced by my AMIGOS experience, though my basic interest in "helping others" no doubt led to joining AMIGOS, too."

"I feel privileged and honored to be a part of this great organization. AMIGOS has the "right stuff." It's a phenomenal organization that year after year just gets better. I am proud that I am able to be a part of it. I have seen the marvelous change that the organization made in my son and I want other kids to have that experience."

"The work AMIGOS Volunteers do in their host communities helps them become world citizens and helps them appreciate the role they can play in making the world a better place abroad, and also back home."

"Thirty-five years ago when I went on AMIGOS the world seemed like a huge place and Central America may as well have been on another planet. When I went on AMIGOS it took weeks for us to get letters from home and our only real contact with the U.S. was the ham radio (YN9KMZ). I suspect that for young people heading off on AMIGOS in these days of cell phones and the internet it doesn't feel quite so exotic. I think that as a teenager what I would have told you is that the main thing I took away from my AMIGOS experience was that people everywhere were basically the same, with similar hopes, dreams and desires."
