Amigos de las Américas (AMIGOS), founded in 1965, inspires and builds young leaders through unparalleled leadership and community service opportunities and immersion in cross-cultural experiences across the Americas. The Austin Chapter, one of 26 chapters nationwide, recruits high school and college students, 16 years and older, from across Central Texas to join our training program, where we build and inspire young leaders through collaborative community development.
Every summer, our Volunteers spend six to eight weeks living with their host families in one of eight Latin and South American countries to lead health, cultural and environmental education projects in consultation with the local residents. AMIGOS currently sends volunteers to live and volunteer in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay and Peru where they learn about new cultures and traditions, leadership in community service, and strengthen their language skills through a unique immersion experience.
Our projects give young leaders the opportunity to explore their potential and rise to the challenge of independently managing responsibility within a multicultural setting. We believe that young people have the power and ability to change our world for the better!
The Austin Chapter is administered by an all Volunteer Board of Directors who is committed to and passionate about the AMIGOS mission. Our fun and dynamic training program begins with a “Welcome Party” in November and culminates with our “Despidida” (Going Away Party) in May. Our Training Team is lead by college age veterans of the AMIGOS program and enriched by the inclusion of our enthusiastic volunteers just returned from “in country”. In addition to recruiting, training, community service learning, and general administration, our Chapter actively fundraises in partnership with our
The Austin Chapter continues to foster youth leadership through inclusion of AMIGOS Alumni on our Board of Directors, as part of our Training Team and in all of our community service learning activities. We are proud of our Austin Vols!
