Community Development Internships

AMIGOS is highly respected for its community-impact programs and hard-working volunteers.  This has led to long-standing partnerships with Latin American agencies and host communities that ensure the sustainability of our projects. As a Gap student, you will be matched with an internship at a community development agency based on your personal preferences and the needs of our partner agencies. The focus of your internship could range from women's rights at ADIC, to working with rural youth at Plan International, to building stronger communities with Mpowering People. You will collaborate with your new network to identify, plan, and carry out a service project based on your unique community.

Here are just a few of the organizations that we work with:

  • Plan Nicaragua strives to achieve lasting improvements in the quality of life of deprived children in developing countries, through a process that unites people across cultures and adds meaning and value to their lives.

  • Empowerment International strives to break the cycle of poverty before it is transferred to yet another generation, by building more educated and productive communities.

  • ADIC works in rural and semi-urban communities in Matagalpa to develop collaborative community development through diverse initiatives and projects.

  • Fabretto strives to support, promote, and strengthen children's education, formal and occupational, in order to break the poverty cycle and decrease the extreme poverty rate in Nicaragua.

  • ADM  strives to correct their own inefficiencies and utilize the efficiencies and resources they already have available with improved rationale, efficiency, and productivity while minimizing the current poverty condition in under developed communities.

  • mPoweringpeople  strives to give street children in Nicaragua a future without poverty, violence, prostitution or drugs.

  • La Esperanza is a volunteer group focusing on children’s education n in poverty-stricken areas. Volunteers go out into the schools and assist the teachers, tutor young children, run sports programs, introduce children to computers, teach English and help stimulate an interest in learning.

  • Medicos Del Mundo (MdM)  seeks a world in which the universality of human rights is real and effective for everyone; with the help of volunteers and other social movements,  MdM aims to grant the right to health for all people in poverty, gender inequality and social exclusion or who are victims of humanitarian crises, and to encourage changes in the value system and economic and trade relations that determine the absence of structural impossibility, equity, and access to goods and  essential care.

*Because of the sensitive nature of some of these service placements, some partner organizations will require an additional screening, background check or application to participate.

Amigos de las Américas (AMIGOS) inspires and builds young leaders through collaborative community development and immersion in cross-cultural experiences.
