Cañar Bevil Project
Project:
Requesting Support For "Liga de futból de Puzhio" (Puzhio Soccer League)
Location: Cañar, Ecuador
Amount Needed: $1578 USD
Summary:
This project will create a soccer league in Puzhio while the children and youth are on vacation from school for this summer, and for those to follow. Teams in the age groups under 10, under 12, under 16, and free entry will compete to raise funds to build a wall on the far side of the coliseum that floods when there is rain. At the end of the summer there will be a championship match for each division to play in front of the community. Additionally, teams will work to prevent deforestation and water contamination by planting trees in the high mountains of Puzhio.
The project director believes that receiving the Bevil Grant is crucial to ensuring that the project is completed as the volunteers and youth soccer committee originally envisioned it. While a smaller project will be completed if the community does not receive the additional funds provided by the Bevil Grant, it will not motivate the youth soccer committee or the volunteers in the same way that working on the larger project would offer motivation. The project, as it is currently envisioned, can not be completed without the additional funds of a the Bevil Grant.
This project has the support of the community, because both soccer and the coliseum are large parts of the culture in the community. The league will create an opportunity for the youth to enjoy themselves in an atmosphere filled with respect, peace and harmony. The project is sustainable; with the effort of the youth, it can be repeated for summers to come, and the incorporation of community youth will distract them in their summer vacation from drugs and alcohol that many youth partake in. Additionally, the coliseum is currently unusable in the rain despite its roof cover so this wall will allow play in all conditions.
This project will construct a more amicable community because boys and girls both young and old will have equal opportunity to play soccer and enjoy themselves during vacation. This league can be the beginning of a fun tradition where the youth are able to learn leadership skills as well as teamwork. The funds raised by each team will help build the wall of the coliseum, which will make the community sports arena playable under all conditions. This fundraising will make the youth more aware of their capabilities for change and action in community, and the entire project provides an alternative to using drugs and alcohol.
