Project: Requesting Support for "Rescate del centro de reciclaje de Yaxunah" (Rescue the Recylcing Center in Yaxunah!)

Location: Yucatán, Mexico

Amount Needed: $1196.25 USD

Summary:

Jaguares is a very organized youth group in Yaxunah who conduct weekly trash collections and a community clean up.  There is a recycling center designed to temporarily hold recyclable items, but currently due to lack of doors, people steal their plastic bottles.  The Jaguares hope to equip the center with doors so they can store and sell the plastic bottles to fund more community projects.

Currently, people toss trash on the streets, which creates a health hazard and is detrimental for the environment and appearance of the town.  Yaxunah receives many tourists due to its archeological sites and its cultural center.  The project will highlight the fact that recyclable materials are treated as trash and increase awareness in the community.  The youth group is losing motivation to maintain weekly trash collection because their bottles are being stolen.  Placing doors on the center will ensure them a safe and secure place to store their bottles and contribute to overall appearance of Yaxunah.

Yaxunah is a great example of a motivated community and organized youth group, and is the community that provided the foundation of the AMIGOS Yucatán project being the location of the Centro Comunitario de Yaxunha.  The community is very excited about the arrival of the AMIGOS program and volunteers, and the additional support and opportunity the Bevil Grant can provide an excellent jumpstart to give additional momentum to the project and set a foundation for future projects in the area.
