Canar Bevil Project
Full Description
by 2012 AMIGOS Project Staff in Cañar, Ecuador
1. What is the focus of the project?
The focus is on the empowerment of the youth to build a wall to improve their community through the creation of a community-wide youth soccer league.
2. How were the idea and plans for this project generated?
Volunteers spoke to many community members who displayed interest in a soccer league and showed their desire for an improved coliseum. Community members of all ages and genders have contributed to the ideas.
3. Does the community support the project? If so, how are they demonstrating support?
There is great support from the community, both from community members and the community government. Community youth demonstrate support by participating in the league as well as fundraising for the project. Other community members will be helping with fundraising, and the community government has declared its support. They will help announce meeting as well as with provide the construction plans for the wall.
4. Who will be involved in implementing the project?
The government will be providing the plans and material list necessary for the project and teams will be involved in fundraising as well as playing in the league. Amigos volunteers and local volunteers are in charge of making a schedule for the championship as well as arranging “working days” to attract community members to help construct the project. Additionally, the Municipal government will be providing some workers to aid in construction and transportation of materials.
5. What future services, if any, will be provided with this project?
With the jerseys and trophies being provided by the project, there are no future services that are needed in order for this championship to continue in future years.
6. Who will have overall responsibility for implementing the project?
Amigos volunteers and local volunteers will have the overall responsibility of implementing the project.
7. Who will have the on-going responsibility of upkeep or management after the project has been implemented?
Local volunteers and the community youth group will be in charge of management after the project has been implemented. The local vols are Prissila Lojano and Daniel Samaniego. They will be in charge of organizing the tournament in future years and establishing the tradition.
8. What specific signs will indicate that this project has been successful? If you were to return in 1-2 years, what signs would you look for to show that this project has been successful in the long-term?
Success could be measured immediately after project implementation by looking at the number of children and youth involved in the league as well as community attendance to the final matches. In 1-2 years success could be measured in the increase or decrease of children in the league, as well as the number of community events that are held in the coliseum and its general use. Looking further into the future, we could look at the number of youth and adults involved in drugs and alcohol in the community as opposed to today to measure success.
9. Approximately how many and who are the intended beneficiaries?
The direct beneficiaries of the project will include both the young boys and girls as well as the adolescent boys and girls. By directly benefitting the children and youth, the entire community no matter the age of the community member will be benefitted.
10. How will sustainability of this project be assured?
Sustainability of the project can be assured by involving the youth group and setting the precedent for the next year’s championship.
11. How will success be measured for this project?
Immediately, success will be measured by the number of children involved in the league, and an increase in the use of the coliseum for play and community events as a result of less flooding after rain.
