Gap Year Program

The AMIGOS Gap Year Program is designed for students who wish to gain an extended international volunteer and immersion experience before or during college. Combining field volunteer work, exposure to our partner agencies working in international development, family home-stays and excursions around the country, our program offers hands-on experiential learning that prepares young people for college and beyond. Duration and Dates

Length:     Gap Year - 8 months
                   Gap Semester - 4 months

Location:  Nicaragua

Dates:       Gap Year: September 1, 2012 to May 15, 2013 
                   Gap Semester Session I: September 1 to December 20, 2012 
                   Gap Semester Session II: January 20 to May 15, 2013
                   * All dates include a 2 week training session

What Volunteers Do:

  • Live with a host family in a community or city with one other Volunteer partner
  • Serve as an intern with a local or international community development organization
  • Collaborate with youth and community members to organize service projects and facilitate extra-curricular activities
  • Participate in monthly trainings and excursions all around Nicaragua along with other Volunteers each month
  • Create multimedia projects to track and share progress (videos, blogs, etc.)
  • Independent research proposals will be considered
