Oaxaca, Mexico 2011: Project Update #3
It’s hard to believe that our summer in Oaxaca is almost over! Volunteers have truly become a part of their host communities and integrated into Oaxacan culture, and are currently spending their last week in community finishing up their CBIs, dancing in fiestas patrias (patron saint festivals), and attending regional despedidas (goodbye parties).
It’s been a whirlwind of a summer, but Staff is so proud of all the hard work each Volunteer has put into their community! From planting hundreds of trees to creating recycling separation systems to fundraising for emergency medical supplies for the clinic, Volunteers have definitely impacted their communities and been impacted by all of their new friends and host families.
While Volunteers are sad to leave their home for the past 7 weeks, they are also excited for a fun few days spent exploring Oaxaca city before finally returning to all of their family and friends back home. Volunteers are especially excited to explore the zócalo (town center), the Mercado (market), and the archeological site of Monte Alban, located in the hills above Oaxaca city, during debriefing.
Thanks for a fabulous summer! If you haven’t already become a fan of our Facebook page Amigos de las Américas: Oaxaca, Mexico you are missing out on some great pictures of Volunteers in action this summer!
