Phoenix Chapter History

The Phoenix Chapter of Amigos de las Américas (AMIGOS) was founded by Dr. Boyd Hayward in 1970, following his 1969 service in Latin America as a volunteer physician through the AMIGOS program. From 1970 to 1985, the Phoenix Chapter of AMIGOS sent hundreds of young volunteers to serve on projects throughout Latin America with a focus on healthcare assistance and disease prevention through inoculation. The Phoenix Chapter of AMIGOS was reinstated in the fall of 2006. Several of the original Phoenix Chapter Volunteers and the original Training Director, Mireya Hayward, remain committed to the Amigos mission to promote youth leadership and multicultural awareness by serving on the Board of Directors and directing the training program. Since 2007, the Phoenix Chapter has successfully trained and sent fifty two young volunteers to work on diverse community-based initiatives in various Latin American countries. Most recently, twelve Volunteers completed training for their summer projects and four volunteers are already in their host countries. Que todos tengan mucho exito y que se disfruten harto!
