Lempira Midway Update

July 8, 2008

Volunteers and their youth counterparts have been busy planning and organizing the preliminary components of their community-based initiatives. This week Project Staff is excited to start sending out materials for their projects, which include a wide range of exciting and creative ideas. In addition, Volunteers are coordinating fundraising activities to support larger and more extensive community projects. Volunteers are doing an excellent job of motivating local youth to get involved with the educational activities in their communities.

In preparation for the regional fairs next week, Volunteers are learning folkloric dances, practicing songs, and memorizing poetry, among many other types of presentations which will be shared between communities. Beyond program related activities, Volunteers are becoming fully immersed in the tranquil Honduran lifestyle, complete with making corn tortillas and playing soccer with the children with dawn ‘til dusk. Project Staff is so proud of all of the hard work and the dedication of the Volunteers thus far and can’t wait to see what the second half of the summer has in store!

AMIGOS Voices

“My AMIGOS experience shaped and influenced my entire life. I can’t imagine what I would be like today without the exposure to the rest of the world that AMIGOS gave me. I’m sure that my choice of a health care profession was influenced by my AMIGOS experience.”

–Lynn Nussle Krog, Trauma Rehab Coordinator, Harborview Medical Center
