Dominican Republic Final Update

August 12, 2008

After eight weeks of hard work, the Volunteers are ready to celebrate their successes and head home! The past few weeks have been extremely busy, with Volunteers completing community-based initiatives, working on campamentos (educational workshops), and bonding with host families. We’ve completed baseball fields, libraries, murals, trash cans, and other projects.

On August 12, debriefing will kick off with two simultaneous despedidas (farewell parties), one in San Juan and one in Azua. The Volunteers will spend a few hours with their host families and friends eating, dancing bachata and taking photos before saying goodbye.  From there the Volunteers will get on buses and head for the capital of Santo Domingo, where in addition to normal debriefing activities they will also have time for some shopping and sightseeing in the city. We will wake up bright and early on August 14 to send Volunteers home to their eagerly awaiting family and friends! We are all very proud of the work we’ve done this summer, and we’re excited to share it with everyone.

AMIGOS Voices

“The youth of the world need to prepare themselves for a world without borders, and as often as we have the opportunity to intertwine another cultures’ life-experience with our own, we should take it. This is the trend of things, and experiences like AMIGOS will make that transition all the more smooth.”
