Granada Final Update
July 30, 2008
As the summer draws to a close, the Volunteers in Granada and Rivas are wrapping up work on their Community-based initiatives and preparing to leave their communities. Volunteers and community members have implemented an impressive array of projects this summer, from basketball courts and murals to preschools and libraries. The Volunteers have helped organize soccer tournaments and dances to raise funds for the projects and have participated in educational workshops to share health information with children and adults in their communities. They have worked diligently in their local health clinics, assisting the nurses with anything from paperwork to patient consultations.
The Volunteers are excited to see their families back home, but saddened at the thought of leaving the many friends they have made in their communities. They have been both teachers and students, learning about the rich Nicaraguan culture and sharing their own, and they have become their host families’ beloved adopted sons and daughters. They will be dearly missed.
This week, the communities are holding farewell parties for the Volunteers, where everyone will have a chance to eat, dance, and reminisce about the last seven weeks. The Volunteers will then come to the beautiful colonial city of Granada for Debriefing, where they will have time to shop, explore, share their experiences, and reflect on their summers before heading home to their families and friends.
