Dominican Republic
Briefing Report

dr01

After months of anticipation and a long day of travel, Project Staff and Volunteers finally met at the Santo Domingo Airport de Las Américas in the capital of the Dominican Republic.

The Volunteers spent the first night of their summer in Santo Domingo, listening to bachata music and playing dominoes with our six Dominican volunteers who will be participating with our Volunteers all summer. Waking up early in the morning, we loaded up our buses to head to the mountain town of Las Matas de Farfán to officially begin briefing.

Over the course of the next three and a half days, the Volunteers were led by Project Staff in a variety of activities and discussions. These ranged from project specific details and teambuilding activities to discussions regarding health and safety.

Partnerships and routes were also formed. After spending half a day with youth counterparts from their new communities, the Volunteers were introduced to their host families, who were anxiously awaiting their arrival. Happy and healthy, the Volunteers are currently integrating themselves into their new homes and brainstorming potential projects for the summer.

AMIGOS Voices

“This is an organization that gives people, at a very young age, exposure and opportunity to understanding and serving people that brings about greater understanding and compassion on all sides of national borders. I believe that if all young people were to do AMIGOS, or something like it, they’d be off to a more educated and enlightened start as they pursue their callings in life.”
