Briefing Report

¡Saludos desde Nicaragua!  The Granada/Rivas project is off to a great start.  Volunteers arrived to Managua on Thursday evening and were directly transported to our briefing site - the beautiful Casa de Retiro Tepeyac, a retreat center nestled under the Mombacho volcano outside of Granada.  The volunteers were excited to pick mangos straight from the trees and even spotted a few monkeys!

Our partnering agencies, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education presented to the Volunteers on Friday. They focused on important health issues in Nicaragua such as malaria, dengue fever, water sanitation and prenatal care. Volunteers also learned about the youth groups they will be collaborating with and planned activities for their first week in community.

Staff worked hard to partner volunteers and place them in the 23 communities that AMIGOS will be working in this summer.  A fun activity was planned to announce partnerships and communities, and volunteers spent the afternoon getting to know their route, Project Supervisors and communities. On Sunday morning the Ministry of Health from Granada and Rivas picked up Volunteers and transported them to their respective communities where they were introduced to their host families and local youth.

Volunteers are currently getting to know community members and setting up meetings to plan projects and Youth to Youth classes for the summer.  Project Supervisors have left for their first week on route to further support volunteers in setting up community meeting and adjusting to life in the Nicaraguan “campo” (that means a lot of rice and beans!).

AMIGOS Voices

“I came out of my volunteer experience with much more independence and self-sufficiency that I had before, a much richer perspective of the world, a deeper appreciation for empowerment (both of myself and of others), and an unwavering desire to make my life a life of serving others the best I know how.”
