Valle, Honduras Mid-Term Report

The Volunteers are now settled in with their host families and enjoying the routine of the community and their work.  They are halfway through their summer experience and have been busy completing the youth grant projects and their community and school based construction projects.  Upon arriving in their communities the Volunteers went to work with their youth counterparts putting on different events such as soccer tournaments, traditional dances, theater performances, presentations and environmental projects.  The Volunteers and youth counterparts will have another conference to present their activities and some will perform skits and traditional dances.  This Saturday the Volunteers working in communities with the host agency ADEPES will meet in Pespire for the youth conference.  They will be treated to a special performance and activities put on by a Nicaraguan youth group.  The Volunteers in SAVE communities will be attending their youth conference in two weeks to present their projects and enjoy a presentation from a woodworking cooperative.

This week Volunteers are participating in their midterm route picnics in San Lorenzo and Pespire.  They will be sharing their experiences with fellow Volunteers, enjoying lunch and have an opportunity to connect to home by calling or using the internet.  They are looking forward to having the day to speak English, relax and eat some American influenced food!  Volunteers will return to their communities with some new tools and energy to continue on with their projects.  Volunteers’ school and community based projects range from latrines and water tank repairs, as well as school and community facility infrastructure improvements.  The communities and the Volunteers will soon be starting on their Community-Based Initiatives, the smaller community projects that the Volunteers have been planning with community members.  The Volunteers are also continuing their activities in the school, focusing on environmental, creative expression and health activities and lessons.

The last half of the summer is sure to fly by with so many projects and activities!
