Intibucá is located in a mountainous region near the border with El Salvador and about 3.5 hours west of the capital, Tegucigalpa. Intibucá is a beautiful, temperate region. It is green and mountainous with gorgeous views and many small rivers that cut through the valleys. La Esperanza, the staff headquarter city, and nearby communities lie in a transition zone between pine forest and tropical areas, providing a mixture of deciduous trees, evergreen pines and tropical palm-like trees.

For the next 17 years (except 1974), AMIGOS Volunteers worked on immunizations, eyeglass distribution, animal health, well digging, and community sanitation projects in 13 of the 18 departments of Honduras.

AMIGOS Voices

“My AMIGOS experience shaped and influenced my entire life. I can’t imagine what I would be like today without the exposure to the rest of the world that AMIGOS gave me. I’m sure that my choice of a health care profession was influenced by my AMIGOS experience.”
