Serving on Project Staff provides young adults with an unmatched experience in project management. Not only will you participate in the implementation of beneficial development activities, but you will also be an integral part in the planning, preparation, and evaluation of them, too. You will be asked to build relationships with partner agencies, creatively look for solutions to challenges, and inspire new Volunteers to be agents of positive change.
Build Professional Skills and Experience
In exchange for the energy and expertise you will contribute to the AMIGOS program as a member of Project Staff, you will develop or enhance skills in:
- Program Development and Evaluation
- Personnel Supervision
- Budget Planning and Implementation
- Cross-cultural Communication
- Crisis Management
- Spanish and/or Portuguese
- Group Process Facilitation
- Participatory Learning
- Networking
Serving on AMIGOS Project Staff provides you with an excellent opportunity to build skills that you will use again and again in your personal and professional life. Many former Project Staff members develop successful careers in public health, medicine, education, government, international development, and business and attribute much of their success to their AMIGOS experience.
Earn College Credit
As a Project Staff member, you may be eligible to earn credit at your college or university. Past participants have been successful in receiving credit towards internship requirements and relevant fields of study.
Recognition for Community Service
As an organization that highly values service learning and youth
leadership development, AMIGOS is pleased to acknowledge 40 hours of
community service hours for each week a Volunteer is in Latin America.
University and graduate school admissions officers look favorably upon
students who are highly invested in community service, and this
experience may be of special consideration in scholarship and job
applications. Those interested in obtaining written acknowledgment for
their service work may contact Director of Volunteer Administration,
Glenn Bayron, at gbayron@amigoslink.org or (800) 231-7796.
See Latin America from a Different Perspective
Joining the AMIGOS Project Staff gives you the opportunity to travel to Latin America and immerse yourself on a level few ever get to experience. After working on a project with AMIGOS, you will have a deeper understanding of the people, the country, and the culture. You will work side by side with local leaders and partner agencies, becoming a peer instead of remaining a tourist.
Give Back
Project Staff members make AMIGOS programs possible and help support sustainable community development in Latin American communities. Remember everything you received from your experience as an AMIGOS Volunteer? Now it’s your turn to make that growth, self-realization, and skill-building possible for other young people. Join us in making next year’s programs even more powerful and life-changing.
Financial Benefits
Beyond the numerous personal and professional benefits of serving on Project Staff, there are also financial benefits for you as well. As a Project Staff member, all of your program expenses (food, lodging, transportation, and materials) will be paid for by AMIGOS, including airfare to and from Latin America. In addition, all Senior Project Supervisors, Associate Project Directors, and Project Directors receive a small stipend upon successful completion of the project. This is your chance to spend time in Latin America without having to spend a fortune to be there!
