Bart became involved in AMIGOS, at his father’s suggestion in 1974. His father was friendly with Guy Bevil, the founder of AMIGOS and wanted Bart to have an experience which would help him decide if he really wanted to pursue a career in medicine. Bart spent the summers of 1974 and 1975 as an AMIGOS Volunteer in Colombia and Ecuador, administering inoculations against measles and tuberculosis. The experience only helped solidify his decision to enter into the medical field.

After graduating high school, Bart attended Emory University and then returned to his native Houston for medical school at Baylor College of Medicine and then completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, also at Baylor.

Since completing his studies, Bart has maintained a private practice in Ob/Gyn while serving on the faculty of Baylor as well. He has served as the managing partner of his medical group which recently became a part of Texas Children’s Hospital.

Bart became re-involved with the Houston Chapter of AMIGOS when his eldest daughter Carrie began her training as a Volunteer in 2000 and he was asked to serve as Medical Director of the chapter. Carrie was a volunteer in 2001 and 2002 in Costa Rica and Honduras and then served on project staff 2004-2006 in Costa Rica and Mexico. Bart has since served as vice president and president of the Houston Chapter and currently serves as co-treasurer.

Bart enjoys spending time with his wife Ilene and their 3 grown children, Carrie, Michael and Kelly. He is an avid runner, swims and loves to travel.
