Jesse was first an AMIGOS Volunteer in the Guanacaste Mountains in Costa Rica in a small coffee growing community called Los Angeles de Nandayure where he immersed himself in the culture and tranquil life. Years later, while studying Spanish and English at Western Washington University, he further developed his passion for Latin American culture and literature and he decided to return to AMIGOS as a Project Supervisor in Paraguay. He was hooked from that point on. After consecutive years on program staff he joined the AMIGOS professional staff as a Regional Director in winter 2009.
From kitchens to the classroom as a cook and as an English teacher, Jesse has worked and lived in Bellingham, Washington; Chicago, Illinois; Brooklyn, New York; and in Medellín, Colombia. He has drifted far from his home town of Walla Walla, Washington where he operated corn and pea combines during harvest and worked in busy restaurant kitchens, but he still remains drawn to the Pacific Northwest. He loves to travel and has done so extensively throughout the Americas. He also enjoys hiking, backpacking, climbing volcanoes, fishing and almost anything outdoors. He is crazy about most things Colombian — especially the lively music, the rich gastronomy and the humble people — and he is very excited to learn everything there is to know about Mexico.
Jesse’s AMIGOS history is the following:
- 2000: Volunteer, Costa Rica
- 2004: Project Supervisor, Paraguay
- 2005: Project Supervisor, Nicaragua
- 2006: Associate Project Director, Costa Rica
- 2007: Project Director for J-Term, Costa Rica
- 2008: Project Director, Nicaragua
