Sarah Johnson

Sarah Johnson is a Project Director at Management Sciences for Health (MSH), a private, nonprofit international public health organization working to improve health service delivery and health outcomes in developing countries throughout the world. She directs the AIDSTAR-Two Project, a project designed to contribute to stronger and more sustainable HIV/AIDS programs, organizations and networks by providing organizational development and technical public health capacity building.

Previously Sarah served as a technical team leader in another global health project at MSH and acted as the  Director of New Business Development in MSH’s Center for Leadership and Management (CLM). As the New Business Director, Ms. Johnson coordinated and led successful new business development activities for CLM, resulting in millions of dollars of funding for new projects. Sarah also had oversight for virtual networks and virtual management and leadership learning programs in CLM including the Virtual Leadership Development Program, the Virtual Strategic Planning Program, the Virtual Business Planning Program, the Virtual NGO Governance Program and other program delivered to thousands of managers and their teams in health service delivery organizations in developing countries. Ms. Johnson also led the development of the Health Manager’s Toolkit, a compendium of electronic tools accessed by over 6,000 people on a monthly basis and the Global Exchange Network (GEN) for Reproductive Health, a web-based virtual learning and sharing network for professionals in reproductive health organizations in developing countries. An organizational development, public health and project management specialist, Sarah has been instrumental in developing key MSH tools and approaches regularly used in health services organizations and programs.  

Sarah has provided technical assistance to Ministries of Health and HIV/AIDs, reproductive health and family planning NGOs and civil society organizations in many countries throughout the world, especially in Latin America and Africa, facilitating organizational management assessments and management and leadership workshops and providing technical assistance in human resource management, leadership development, strategic planning, project management, board development and other areas.

Sarah has lived in Mexico, Colombia and Puerto Rico. She worked for several years in the Mexican Health Ministry. Fluent in Spanish, she holds a MPH from Harvard School of Public Health and a MSW from the University of California, Berkley. She has taught international development at Boston College School of Social Work and was also an instructor in Boston University School of Public Health(BUSPH). She acts as a practicum supervisor for BUSPH. Sarah currently serves on two Boards of Directors: Amigos de Las Américas and the Brookline, Massachusetts-Quezalguaque, Nicaragua sister city project. Sarah has two adult sons in their twenties. Her son, Nicolas Pena, participated as an AMIGOS Volunteer in Guanajuato, Mexico several years ago.
