Susan Stevenson
Susan’s first experience with Amigos de las Américas was in the summer of 1980, building latrines in Oaxaca, Mexico. She continued working with AMIGOS every summer of high school and college, playing every field role possible – Veteran Volunteer, Project Supervisor, Assistant Project Director and Project Director – in Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica.
After college Susan wanted to find “a job like AMIGOS,” so she went to work for Save the Children, supporting their Latin America programs and eventually joining their fledgling Bolivia field office. From Bolivia, Susan went to Stanford University to pursue an MBA degree. After Stanford, Susan became a management consultant with McKinsey and Company’s New York office where she worked on strategic issues in a range of industries. She spent part of her McKinsey career working with Latin American clients out of the Buenos Aires office.
Susan left McKinsey to help Ashoka, a non-profit organization that supports social entrepreneurs, expand its programs in Latin America. After several years focused on Latin America, Susan became Ashoka’s VP, International, responsible for the selection and support of Ashoka Fellows in 35 countries throughout Latin America, Asia, Africa and the United States.
Since her children were born, Susan has been taking a brief hiatus from international work to focus on raising her two young daughters. During this time she has started a company and done a variety of long-term consulting projects in the early childhood and education fields. Susan currently works as SVP for Strategy and Business Development for Sister to Sister Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on preventing women’s heart disease. Susan lives in Washington, D.C. with her husband and two daughters.
