Eligibility and Requirements

To be eligible to become an AMIGOS volunteer you must meet three basic requirements:

• Be 16 years of age or older by September 1 of the year of your summer service in Latin America 
• Have completed 2 years of high school Spanish language (or equivalent) before your departure for Latin America
• Have completed your sophomore year of high school before your departure to Latin America

How to Get Involved in AMIGOS

You can start your journey with AMIGOS today and spend your next summer in Latin America by becoming an Amigos volunteer.

Follow these steps to become an AMIGOS volunteer with the San Francisco Chapter:

1. Attend an Information Session in September. The information session will provide you with an introduction to the program, and should be attended by prospective volunteers and their parent/guardian.

2. Complete a Volunteer Application.

3. Attend a Family Interview. Once we receive your application, we will contact you to invite you for an interview, where we can talk more about our program and learn more about you. Family interviews will take place in October. Family Interview Sign-ups will be conducted at the Information Sessions.
4. Meet the Following Requirements throughout the year before departure for Latin America:

• Attend approximately one training meeting a month between November and your departure to Latin America (June or July).

• Attend approximately one Chapter meeting a month (with a parent/guardian, if you are in high school) between November and your departure to Latin America. Meetings will take place weekdays and some weekends at various locations in San Francisco.

• Commit and fulfill Chapter fundraising requirements. Volunteers will sell chocolate and coffee in December, and will write fundraising letters in January to raise money for their work in Latin America

• Contribute a family fee to cover the costs of training and airfare to Latin America. Scholarships are available.
